Hughes was convicted in the 1988 murders of a 3-year-old boy and his cousin, a 15-year-old girl. Hughes attacked his victims in a field behind the apartment complex he resided in. The boy was stabbed through the throat and found dead by police upon arrival. The girl, stabbed in the neck and chest. Before she died at the scene, the girl was able to tell police that Preston attempted to rape her prior to stabbing her. Hughes was on probation for the sexual assault of a child at the time.
