Gallup Poll on Ideology

In how many states do the number of people who identify themselves as "liberal" outnumber those who identify themselves as "conservative"?
Zero, provided you don't treat D.C. as a "state" for this purpose.

That somewhat surprising result is in this Gallup report. Some unsurprising results include the facts that the most conservative states are in the Deep South and that conservative/liberal does not correspond exactly to Republican/Democrat.

California is in the "lower range" for percentage of conservatives, with only 33.1% but in the "higher range" for percentage of liberals, with 25.4%. Two different scales, obviously.

Once upon a time, "liberal' meant a person who wanted the "whites only" signs to come down. I considered myself a liberal at the time. In later years, the label became tarnished as it came to be associated with other, less noble positions, such as inadequately punishing and restraining criminals, caring more about the perpetrators than the victims.
