Iran to Pardon Hikers

Lally Weymouth reports in the WaPo:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he intends to release two Americans who have been jailed on charges of espionage for two years and grant them a "unilateral pardon."

The Americans, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 29, were arrested along with another American while they were hiking along the Iran-Iraq border two years ago. In August, they were sentenced to eight years in prison.
That is good news, of course, but personally I find it difficult to muster much sympathy for people who go hiking on the border of a country run by fanatics or go yachting in pirate-infested waters.  There are lots and lots of other places in the world to have your recreation, folks.

That we don't have much sympathy for people who really should have known better does not excuse the monstrous Iranian regime for its actions in this case. According to a NYTimes article a few months ago, the Administration's position was that the hikers were in Iraqi territory when approached by the Iranian border guards. That would make this the kidnapping of American citizens by a foreign government.

Upon their return to the United States, why not permanently revoke their passports? They've certainly caused a heck of a lot of trouble.

They each have to pay 500k and the girl already paid the same amount. Where do they get the money?

I'm not that sympathetic towards them in that all 3 are your typical antiAmerican twats.

To a certain extent, there is a bit of victim-blaming here. I am not sympathetic to these characters at all; that said, I am less sympathetic towards that monstrous government and the message of weakness that is being sent by the US. That these guys were stupid/naive does not mean that they weren't victims.

I think what's going on is that Iran kidnapped them, either literally or in effect, and -- having previously found hostage taking to be a fun and profitable experience -- held them for ransom, now to be called "bail."

The only major thing I think Ronald Reagan got wrong was that he did not bomb Iran back into dust. That failure gave rise to episodes like this and, more importantly, it was a crucial early victory for aggressive Islamic extremism, something that has cost the United States and the civilized world dearly.

So, where are they getting the half mil for bail? Is it our government??

If you are Jewish such as me, or an American infidel such as ALL of US, you should hold righteous rage close to the surface whenever you hear Eee-ron (Iran)spoken.

Maybe it's just me, since my comrades in Iraq
in '05 were killed by EFP's and RPGs made and shipped with love and affection by Iranians.

So it's not just the elf-in-chief Ahmadinejad (also present abusing our hostages in '79) who supported this killing of Americans and invited Iraqi terrorists for training ('03-onward). Many of the "Aryans" are culpable.

Tell me it's not just me.
