Florida Takes the Number 3 Slot

Valerie Bauerlein reports in the WSJ, "Florida overtook New York as the third most populous state last year, according to data released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau, as the Sunshine State continued to pick up postrecession steam."
During the 2012 presidential election, I was amused to hear a senior political correspondent refer to Rick Perry as the governor of the third-largest state.  The venerable gentleman was either unaware or had forgotten that the Lone Star State moved up to number two almost two decades earlier.

New York had a good, long run as number one, from overtaking Virginia in 1808 to being overtaken by California in 1965.

Admittedly completely off-topic, but I thought it was interesting.
