Executing Aging Murderers:  On the day that Alabama is preparing to execute of pipe-bomb killer Walter Moody, the issue of aging death row inmates is back in the news.  Moody, 83, faces execution later today for planting a bomb which killed federal judge and civil rights champion Robert S. Vance in 1989.  Kim Chandler of the Associated Press reports that, if executed, he would be the oldest murderer put to death since the 1970s. "Killing a fragile man suffering from dementia is unnecessary and cruel," said Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative.  But a major reason for the aging death row population is the decades of unnecessary post conviction review of capital cases. Particularly in cases where guilt is undisputed and the only claims the defendant is making are challenges to the sentence.
