Pipe Bombs in the Mail

Zolan Kanno-Youngs reports for the WSJ:

Packages containing pipe-bomb-type devices addressed to former President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.) and CNN were intercepted by authorities and investigators are looking into whether Democrats are being targeted, federal and local officials said Wednesday.

Update: The WSJ has this editorial Thursday:
Close to an election there are also attempts to blame the devices on intemperate political rhetoric, especially from Donald Trump. We doubt this, and we doubt it in the same way we never believed the attack on Steve Scalise and other Republicans as they were playing baseball in Virginia in 2017 was the fault of Bernie Sanders, though the man guilty of the shooting rampage was a Bernie volunteer.

Mr. Obama offered a better message in Tucson in 2011 when he paid tribute to those killed by the madman who also wounded Rep. Gabby Giffords. Mr. Obama said the lack of civility in politics wasn't to blame--and he cautioned against a political impulse to "lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who happen to think differently than we do."

If we want to make America less vulnerable to violence, we'd do better to look past the political rhetoric and insist on exacting a higher price from those who choose violence. Those who burn universities because they don't like the speaker, white supremacists who seek out and engage in brawls, or masked protestors breaking shop windows--they all deserve the full sanction of the law. The priority now is to find the person responsible--and then ensure the offender spends a long time in prison.

George Soros received the first one. I don't think the question of "whether Democrats are being targeted" is much of a question at this point.

The NYPD spokesman says the devices are not sophisticated. Hopefully the sender is also not sophisticated at evading detection and will be apprehended shortly.

Decencyeveolves: I hope so. Bess Kalb noted this about today’s events:

“A lot of people are saying the bombs have nothing to do with President Trump. That it's unfair to implicate him or his message. Here's the thing about targeted, violent rhetoric: It incites targeted violence. If something is the ‘Enemy of the People,’ it should be destroyed. Here are some of Trump's narratives about bomb recipients: Hillary Clinton is a criminal who killed American soldiers and belongs in jail. Barack Obama founded ISIS (Google it. It's insane. He said it on camera.) George Soros is paying operatives to overtake America... Most recently: The Democrats are a violent mob trying to destroy America. The person (or people) who sent those bombs wasn't acting alone. They were following orders. They were carrying out a rallying cry from the Oval Office and relentlessly, droningly parroted on FOX News. If we are truly going to make America great again, we have to make it safe again. And that needs to start with language. I guess what I'm saying, President Trump, is listen to the woman contractually obligated to stay married to you and ‘Be Best.’”
