Another Clueless Baldwin Rant

Before you blast someone, especially in public, it's a good idea to make sure you have your facts straight and are aiming at the right target.  The notorious Alec Baldwin is apparently unaware of this.  Nardine Saad reports in the L.A. Times that Baldwin tweeted this on Monday:

"Flying from Nassau, Bahamas 2 NY. TSA 'random selects' my 5 month old daughter 4 a pat down. I am not kidding. #travelinginUSisadisgrace."
The TSA is, of course, a part of the United States Department of Homeland Security.  The TSA does not do the airport screenings in the Bahamas for the obvious (to persons of sense) reason that the Bahamas are not part of the United States.  The esteemed (by many, though I can't fathom why) Mr. Baldwin was apparently unaware that he was in a foreign country being screened by an agency of a foreign government.  So his hashtag says traveling in the United States is a disgrace because of an incident that occurred outside the United States completely out of the control of the U.S. government.

Upon this being pointed out, his "correction" says, "I guess what I'm saying is: Traveling in the US is a pain in the ... ass."  Ms. Saad notes, "Still not the U.S., though, Alec."

Yes, Baldwin's politics and personality leave a lot to be desired, but he's an excellent actor, and my favorites are 'Thick as Thieves' and the remake of the Steve McQueen classic, "The Getaway".

I know, sometimes it's hard to seperate the person from their personalities, but less so with artists and their art.

I have a different view. In my view, the job of an actor -- and everyone else involved in making a movie -- is to make me temporary forget I am watching a movie. I should be so engrossed in the story that the fact it is not real is pushed into the background of consciousness. I should think of the person on the screen exclusively as the character, not the actor, while I'm watching.

For this reason, when an actor has a very prominent, loud, and obnoxious public persona, it ruins any movie he is in, for me at least. I can't look at Baldwin on the screen without thinking of the obnoxious jerk he is in real life.

So there comes a point in public obnoxiousness where an actor really does cross the line and damage his work.

FYI: The Department of Homeland Security maintains a preclearance location at the Nassau airport.

Which means that a DHS official (working in the Bahamas) could have selected anybody for further screening before they could board a US-bound aircraft.

"Preclearance supports CBP’s extended border strategy by providing for the inspection and clearance of commercial passengers on foreign soil."

Watch Alec Baldwin's sales meeting in Glengarry Glen Ross and you will see a melding of the obnoxious jerk he is in real life with his on- screen persona.
