Sessions Drops the Hammer on CA:  As reported by Sadie Gurman and Don Thompson of the Associated Press, the U. S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit naming California Governor Jerry Brown and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra for obstructing federal agencies from enforcing immigration law.  The lawsuit, which was filed in the federal District Court in Sacramento, targets state laws which prohibit employers from co-operating with ICE to identify illegal aliens and another which prohibits local governments from co-operating.  While both Brown and Becerra have responded to reporters, with Brown accusing Sessions of dividing and polarizing Americans, and Becerra stating, "We're in the business of public safety, not deportation," by providing a sanctuary for illegal aliens, including those who have and continue to commit crimes against Americans, it is difficult to characterize Becerra's actions as beneficial to public safety.  Adam Shaw of Fox News reports on Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's advance warning to illegals in her city about last week's ICE effort to identify and arrest criminal aliens. The story notes that while ICE was able to locate 115 illegals who "had prior felony convictions for serious or violent offenses, such as child sex crimes, weapons charges and assault, or had past convictions for significant or multiple misdemeanors," some 800 evaded arrest, possibly due to the Mayor tipping them off.

Decencyevolves: Sadly, this is the level of honesty we can expect from the Trump Administration, including the attorney general:

“The San Francisco spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has resigned over what he described as ‘false’ and ‘misleading’ statements made by top-ranking officials, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and ICE Acting Director Thomas D. Homan.

The now-former spokesman, James Schwab, told news outlets late Monday that his resignation stemmed from statements by Homan and Sessions that potentially hundreds of ‘criminal aliens’ evaded ICE during a Northern California raid in February because Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned the immigrant community in advance.”

Decency: Thanks pointing out what is clearly a Sally Yates moment. The San Francisco spokesman for Ice is a human oxymoron. I wonder who appointed him? Attorney General Sessions is enforcing the law. California is trying to prevent the law from being enforced. You want to talk about honesty? How about Attorney General Becerra telling us that his job is all about public safety? The week after he threatened to sue businesses who cooperate with ICE, a previously deported illegal with a California driver's license was arrested in San Luis Obispo for posing as an Uber driver in order to pick up intoxicated college girls to rape and rob. Public safety, really? Sadly, this is the level of honesty we can expect from California's top cop.

The question remains, who is being more honest here, the resigning spokesman or the Administration. We have arrived at a moment when even as committed a conservative as Kevin Williamson in a publication as conservative as The National review is saying:

“The Republicans have made their peace, apparently, with Donald Trump’s habitual and reflexive dishonesty.”

From my perspective, the President has treated truth so cavalierly that he has surrendered the right to be believed. I am certainly not alone in this view:

So the mayor of Oakland makes a public announcement warning illegal aliens that ICE is going to be conducting raids to locate alien criminals in her city. The ICE Secretary and the Attorney General later say that some of these criminal aliens undoubtedly heard the warning and evaded arrest. Then the Obama appointed San Francisco ICE spokesperson noisily resigns claiming that these statements were dishonest. Where's the lie? Of course criminals would react to a warning about their impending arrest, that's why drug dealers have lookouts. I expect that neither of you had a problem with cavalier relationship with the truth that President Clinton, President Obama or candidate Hillary enjoyed. Neither did the New York Times. We get it...you don't like Trump. But in the real world, California is obstructing the enforcement of federal law, protecting real criminals in the process. I can cite you hundreds of examples of illegal aliens who have killed, raped, robbed and beaten legal immigrants and U.S. citizens, who would not have been in this country if we had been enforcing federal immigration law. Would it matter more to you if a friend or loved one were among the victims?

Why does President Trunp keep getting dinged for depicting immigrants, including unauthorized immigrants, as an enormous looming threat to the public?

“According to ‘The Integration of Immigrants into American Society,’ a 2015 peer-reviewed study of years of academic research, the perception that immigrants bring crime to the United States has been popular for nearly a century and “is perpetuated by ‘issue entrepreneurs’ who promote the immigrant-crime connection in order to drive restrictionist immigration policy.”

‘Far from immigration increasing crime rates, studies demonstrate that immigrants and immigration are associated inversely with crime,’ the study, published by the National Academy of Sciences, concludes. ‘Immigrants are less likely than the native-born to commit crimes, and neighborhoods with greater concentrations of immigrants have much lower rates of crime and violence than comparable nonimmigrant neighborhoods. However, crime rates rise among the second and later generations, perhaps a negative consequence of adaptation to American society.’

In a recent national poll, 63 percent of respondent’s characterized the President as dishonest to just 34 percent who characterized him as honest.

If this President and his Administration finds it difficult to inculcate trust in the public; there is a remedy. Be more trustworthy.

me: the courts define people illegally in the country as "illegal aliens." You prefer "unauthorized immigrants." By your logic, drug dealers are just unauthorized pharmacists.

It is difficult to have a discussion when one party cannot acknowledge reality.
